The Pigeon
The Feral Pigeon has gained popularity in urban areas due to the over abundance of food, water and shelter that are supplied by both humans and nature. Pigeons will nest and roost in places that allow protection from the weather and elements. There are many health hazards in the droppings of Feral Pigeons. A few of those hazards are: pigeon ornithosis, encephalitis, Newcastle disease, cryptococcosis, toxoplasmosis, and salmonella. Pigeons also carry ectoparasites for example: fleas, lice, mites, ticks, and other biteing pests. The pigeons that are located around airports threaten human safety due to a possible bird-aircraft collision. Pigeon droppings are extremely acidic and will deface property over time. Feral Pigeons have not been sanctioned by the Federal Government as a protected bird.
The method of control used for Feral Pigeons depends on the circumstance. There is no set formula for the control of Feral Pigeons. Pigeon Exclusionary Netting, a strong 2" mesh (nylon, polyethylene, polypropylene), is used when pigeons are nesting in covered/sheltered areas. Ledge Deterrents such as spikes, birdwire, and electrical shock track systems are installed in areas where pigeons are roosting and loafing for short periods of time and are causing health hazards and/or defacing valuable property. Trapping and Baiting can be done in certain situations, only after consulting with a Certified Bird Control Technician.
